Mosquitoes
We are trying to get people together to help with the mosquito problem here. I hope to get individuals, the Surfside Association (I am the President), other associations and possibly the water board together for ideas. We also need to communicate with the Ministerio de Salud. We want to educate residents here to do their part. I will post any information I get under "Mosquitoes" from the left menu. I have a word document with excerpts from whatever I find on the internet. If you have any suggestions, please email me.

July 13 - Update - Dennis Burcar and I went to the Ministerio de Salud in SC last week and they gave us their recommendations on sprayers etc. Dennis has since gathered a lot of data on mosquito control based on the information the Ministerio de Salud gave us. The Ministerio de Salud told us they would not be spraying here anytime soon because of the more severe need in other areas. I have also met with the ASA Water Board here and they are working with us on a plan for our area. I have drafted a letter as the President of the Surfside Residents Association that will be delivered to the Ministerio de Salud asking their assistance in this matter.
You can help. Print out this word document or PDF and distribute them to your neighbors. Please look around your property and eliminate standing water. Even a bottle cap can breed 100's of mosquitoes. Look at everything! Personally, we are spraying vegetable oil in standing water that can not be eliminated. We also heard coffee grounds work also...can't hurt.
Remember, mosquitoes that can carry dengue are most active in the hours around sunset and sunrise! Try to avoid going to high dengue areas like Santa Cruz or at least go during less active hours and wear mosquito repellent!

Aug 12 - Update - Dennis delivered the letter from the Surfside Residents Association to the Ministerio de Salud and got it stamped that it was delivered. Dennis has continued to gather even more information about chemicals by contacting suppliers and data from Bayer. Bayer makes many of the chemicals. He is also still getting information about sprayers. The 2 types of sprayers are atomizer (spray) and nebulizer (heated and creates a fog). Our information on the advantages of one over the other seems to change according to the source. Since the nebulizer is almost 3 times as expensive, we will probably go with the atomizer.
Now we are gathering information and availability of using an "adulticide" or "larvicide". Larvicide kills the larvae where they exist and adulticide kills the adults that the spray comes in contact. Larvicide seems target the specifically mosquitoes.
There are only 2 of us working on the project and we are working as fast as possible.
Sep 2 - The Surfside Residents Association is giving $1000 (half of the cost of the fogger) to the ASA Water Board Association and they will pay for the other half to purchase the fogger. The Water Board will be taking care of everything else! We hope to see the first application soon! Thank you SRA members and the Water Board!
